Chemistry and Economics: Schooling Colleges on Salt’s Safety and Cost Benefits

Here’s the chemistry lesson: Chlorine kills algae and bacteria by disinfection, and it chemically destroys chloramines and dirt. However, it’s a highly dangerous, toxic chemical that can cause fires or discharges of dangerous gases if it’s mishandled. Improper storage can result in a chlorine gas discharge that cause a shutdown of a pool or entire building.

Here’s the economics lesson: When you replace chlorine with a saline-based system, you eliminate the costs of handling and storing chlorine and the costs of dealing with chlorine gas discharges. You can reduce bleach production to 43 cents per gallon, about a third of the cost of using bulk chlorine.
